Leading In The Age Of The New Millennial Workforce

With the workforce changing so quickly, there’s one thing that’s become painfully obvious: The Millennial workforce requires a different type of leader than their baby boomer predecessors. The old school “command and control” style of leadership is no longer feasible.

As a result, the demands of a leader in the Millennial age workforce are forced to take on new perspectives on the following:

Relationships – For Millennials, relationships are key, and the dialog you have with them to find out “what’s important to them” is critical. If you keep the “3 C’s” (clarity, consciousness and consistency) in mind when speaking with your employees, you’ll be able to influence their motivation authentically and transparently, inspiring both compassion and confidence.

Motivation – Motivation is also key for Millenials, but not in the same way it has been for previous generations. Understanding their goals is essential. What inspires them to get things done? What makes them passionate/excited about their job? What do they enjoy doing? Do they understand how their role fits within the organization?

Communications  – Regularly scheduled 1:1 meetings (in a 2-way listening/talking fashion) provide you with the opportunity to have truthful, engaging dialogue and relationship-building, which inspires trust, and shows that you care. When employees are informed, their feeling of involvement and engagement increases, along with a greater sense of purpose and ownership, which in turn, results in higher performance, and career satisfaction.

Leadership training in the age of the Millennial workforce is not a new experiment. It needs to be purposeful and transparent.  Let’s start the discussion today to see how we can help your organization.
